RAYNHAM, Mass. (WPRI) — Police continue to investigate after a woman was found unresponsive in the woods. However, as of Tuesday afternoon, they now say there appears to be no evidence of a crime.
The call came in around 10:40 a.m. to the area of School and Thrasher Streets.
Police told Eyewitness News a woman driving on Thrasher Street spotted another woman laying in the woods, bloody. The caller thought the woman was dead. However, officers said she was unresponsive, but still alive when she was taken to the hospital. According to police, the woman is 36.
Police said the fire department had to use cutting tools to get the woman out of the brush.
Raynham Police Chief James Donovan said investigators believe the incident may be a mental health situation. He said police found the woman’s car nearby and they believe she was there overnight.
Donovan said they are still investigating why she was laying unresponsive in the woods. He said he did not know the extent or cause of the woman’s injuries, but investigators, so far, see no indication she was attacked.
As of Tuesday afternoon, police continued a large search and rescue effort in the woods with K9s.
Donovan said this was “out of an abundance of caution,” because police received a report Monday night about a blonde woman “leaning against a tree” in that area. Since that woman does not match the description of the woman found Tuesday morning, Donovan said police want to make sure there’s not a second person in the woods.
“We want to make sure there’s not another person out here who’s either injured or sick or having medical distress,” Donovan said.
He said the search turned up nothing and no one else was found in the woods. The woman found Tuesday morning is currently in critical condition at Morton Hospital, police said.
According to Donovan, police are still investigating and hope more information will help them figure out what happened.
“We’re hoping the information from the hospital will shed some light on what happened here.”
