[anvplayer video=”773197″ /] PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Police continue to look for a 19-year-old man wanted in connection with a shooting outside a Providence recreation center over the weekend.
Maj. David Lapatin told Eyewitness News Luegginn Irizarry, 19, of Providence, is wanted on charges of felony assault. He’s accused of shooting Joshua Conti, 18, of Bristol, multiple times in front of the Neutaconkanut Recreation Center on Plainfield Street in Providence’s Silver Lake section.
According to a police report, Conti was shot three times while sitting in his car with a friend. The friend told police the gunman was trying to talk to Conti through the window, then pulled out a handgun and started shooting. The window was shattered.
The police report says Conti tried to drive forward to escape the gunman, but crashed into the fence surrounding the pool at the Rec Center.
Conti was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital for surgery. At last check, he was listed in critical, but stable condition.
Witnesses told police the gunman fled on foot and appeared to be close in age to the victim. Conti’s car was towed away from the scene.
Monday, Eyewitness News learned the grandson of former Providence Mayor Vincent “Buddy” Cianci was also arrested as part of the investigation.
According to the police report, Joseph Cianci, 18, was charged with possession of a weapon that is not a firearm. The charge stems from Saturday’s shooting, police said.
People who frequent the center and skate park said they rarely see violence in the area.
“Very friendly atmosphere,” Brian Carroll said.
Friends of the victim told Eyewitness News they heard gunshots during the incident, saying that shootings never happen there.
Conti’s friends said the teen was always at the park – and they are supporting their friend as he recovers.
Police have not said how Cianci’s charge is related to the incident. Eyewitness News had made several requests for this information.
